Weekend Trips
A weekend trip to Wheeling ... enjoyable any time of year. Of course, from November 1 - Mid-January, you will want to include the activities related to Wheeling's "City of Lights" and Oglebay Resort's "Winter Festival of Lights."
Friday:
- Arrive in Wheeling in the late afternoon. Plan a dinner and evening at the Wheeling Island Racetrack & Gaming Center or have dinner at an area restaurant and take in the show at the Victoria Vaudeville Theater.

Saturday:
- Enjoy breakfast at one of Wheeling's fine restaurants.
- Tour West Virginia Independence Hall with Mrs. Busby, a Civil War matron telling tales of strife..
- Plan a stop at Wheeling's newest attraction, The Kruger Street Toy and Train Museum or take in the latest exhibit at Oglebay Institute's Stifel Fine Arts Center.
- Spend some time shopping and lunching at the historic Centre Market.
- After lunch, move on to Wheeling's North Main Street for tours of Victorian Homes and shopping.
- Before returning to your hotel, plan a stop at the Wheeling Artisan Center for a tour of the building and its unique shopping.
- Allow time for mid-afternoon refreshments at the first floor microbrewery, River City Ale Works.
- Return to the hotel to re-group. Plan dinner at one of Wheeling's favorite restaurants, or schedule a themed dinner at one of Wheeling's special venues such as the Victorian homes.

Sunday:
- Plan to spend your final morning in Wheeling, "on the hilltop" at Oglebay Resort. Have breakfast at your hotel, or enjoy brunch at Wilson Lodge.
- Tour Oglebay Mansion Museum which includes Wymer's General Store Museum, then stroll through Waddington Gardens to the Carriage House Glass Shop for a tour, exhibits and shopping. End the morning with a guided tour of the park. Have lunch at the resort or at one of Wheeling's other fine restaurants before heading for home.
- For hard-hitting excitement, plan a trip to the Civic Center to watch ECHL hockey and the Wheeling Nailers or Arena football with the Ohio Valley Greyhounds. The West Virginia Penitentiary and Marx Toy Museum are located just south of Wheeling could easily be added to your itinerary on your way into or out of town.

" Place of the Skull " Groups are dying to come to Wheeling to experience a city filled with history and hauntings. The very name "Wheeling" originates with a grisly story dating from frontier times. Local legend tells that the native Indians were displeased by newly arriving pioneers, and placed the scalped head of one of the white "intruders" on a pike at the mouth of Wheeling Creek to warn away other potential settlers.
